Chapter Eight
Another morning approached and Nate awoke alone in his bed. His head was hazy, and his mood was sluggish. He wondered if he would have felt any better or worse if he had taken Drew to his bed last night. He was denying himself pleasure in the hope of doing something that mattered, something that felt right, but there was a good chance that it could all have been a waste of time.
Nothing could happen with Landon unless he found out more about the prophecy. He had to become as much an expert on it as the scholars who had studied it for centuries. He had been privy to a secret, and it was up to him to use it to get back with the man he loved, and prove to Landon that they didn't have to deny themselves this pleasure. The pain inside Nate's heart was still so intense that it threatened to tear him apart. All he wanted was to be close with Landon again.
However, on this day Nate couldn't spend all of it in the library, despite his desire too. He'd already missed a fair chunk of work and had to get back to the hospital, even though nothing apart from Landon seemed important.
He got to work and saw Danny there, who expressed sympathy.
âI'm going to get back with him Danny,â he said, âI have a plan, and it's going to work, I just need time.â
Nate could tell from Danny's expression that his friend didn't believe him, and was concerned. Nate was a ghost that day. He was present in the hospital and did everything that was needed of him, but his mind was elsewhere, lost in the pages of ancient tomes, trying to decipher their secrets. Usually Nate was an engaging presence, always eager to cater to the needs of the patients he treated, but it was as though part of him was absent. In truth, he couldn't wait for the day to end so that he could return to the library and continue his search for the prophecy.
As soon as his shift was over he was out of the hospital like a shot. He barely even said farewell to Danny, but made his way to the library again and ascended the same stairs as before. The receptionist gave him a knowing glance. She wore on her face an expression of warning, perhaps telling him that he was on his final chance, and if he caused any disturbances like yesterday she would be forced to throw him out.
The volunteers buzzed about again, and others were studiously buried in their own books. Nate went straight back to the place he was yesterday, and began his search once more. Pages and pages turned, words flew before his eyes, and before he knew it hours had passed. His muscles ached and when he stretched his back he winced. His eyes throbbed and he wished there was a faster way. There had to be. He still had rows and rows of books to flick though, and his method of searching wasn't the most meticulous.
